The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) is an independent, global-scale, pioneering initiative established in 2004 to enhance equity and well being in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) communities through improved social, environmental and labour practices, good governance and the implementation of ecosystem restoration practices. ARM is committed to social justice and environmental responsibility as the values driving the transformation of ASM.
B Corporation seeks to create a new sector of the economy which harnesses the power of private enterprise to create public benefit. This sector is comprised of a new type of corporation the B Corporation which is purpose-driven and creates benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders.

Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM) is a global networking and coordination facility with a stated mission to “to reduce poverty by improving the environmental, social and economic performance of artisanal and small-scale mining in developing countries.” CASM is currently chaired by the UK's Department for International Development and is housed at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Fair Trade in Gems and Jewelry developed the 5C label to stand against the unholy connection between mining and political and military corruption in African countries that are disturbed by civil war. Stones are sourced directly from mining cooperatives in the African countries of Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Madagascar and Tanzania. Cutting and polishing of these stones occurs by certificated cooperatives in India. All products manufactured and sold under their 5C label are certified conflict free, child labour free and corruption free.
The Foundation for Environmental Security and Sustainability (FESS) is a public policy foundation established to advance knowledge and provide effective solutions to key environmental security concerns around the world. FESS conducts extensive field research in combination with data analysis to produce policy-oriented reports and recommendations that address environmental risks to stability. FESS has initiated a project in collaboration with diamond mining communities in Sierra Leone to improve environmental conditions after mining and to increase livelihood opportunities. The overall goal of this project is to define and implement a process for conducting environmental reclamation and establishing alternative uses for mined-out land that may be replicated throughout Sierra Leone and implemented in other alluvial diamond mining communities in Africa.
No Dirty Gold, a campaign of Earthworks, is calling on retailers to identify and disclose the source of the gold they sell-and to ensure that jewelry, watches, cell phones, computer chips, and other products do not contain gold mined at the expense of communities, workers and the environment. This campaign has signed on approximately one-quarter of the U.S. jewelry market to its “Golden Rules” criteria for more responsible mining and sourcing of metals.
PRIDE Diamonds is a socially responsible diamond mining company, reinvesting profits in source local communities and bringing socially responsible rough diamonds to market. PRIDE uses socially responsible practices throughout its operations; its goal is to do well by doing good. By treating its workers well and reinvesting some of its profits in the surrounding community, PRIDE believes it will be able to gain access to the best land in the countries in which it mines, starting with Sierra Leone.

Ruby Fair is a partnership between British Jewelers and Tanzanian Miners that produces 100% natural rubies in fair and environmentally sound ways. Rubies are mined directly from their mine in Southern Tanzania, and cut and polished at their facility nearby. Ruby Fair takes the welfare of its workers seriously and safety equipment and procedures for mining, cutting, and polishing are strictly adhered to.
Resource Consulting Services is a research and investigation consultancy that provides considered solutions to our clients’ dilemmas. The answers and analysis we offer are matched with advisory, implementation and evaluation services that help see the solutions through to operation. Resource Consulting Services has most recently teamed up with organizations such as FESS and Transfair USA to assess the feasibility of mined-out land rehabilitation and the application of fair trade standards in the mining sector.
Shine on Sierra Leone (SOSL) is a human service foundation that provides education, mentoring and nutritional support to African mining schools.” With staff in both the U.S. and Sierra Leone, SOSL has most recently completed the first environmentally sustainable building project in Sierra Leone: a school. By doing so, SOSL is not only building a sheltered space for students to learn, but also training a team of sustainable builders.
TransFair USA is the leading independent, third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States. TransFair USA audits and certifies transactions between U.S. companies offering Fair Trade Certified products and their international suppliers to guarantee that the farmers and workers producing Fair Trade Certified goods were paid fair prices and wages. Although there is not yet a Fair Trade Certified diamond program, TransFair USA recently commissioned Resources Consulting Services to conduct a successful feasibility study, with promising results. TransFair USA is a member of the Fairtrade Labelling Organization (FLO), the international governing body for Fair Trade Certification standards with 23 members worldwide.
